What makes a number plate legal in the U.K.?

In the UK, a car number plate is legal if it meets certain requirements and is registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). The requirements for a legal number plate in the UK include the following:

    1. The plate must be made of reflective material and have a plain background.
    2. The letters and numbers must be black on a white background (front plate) or yellow on a black background (rear plate).
    3. The lettering must be in a specific font and size, with a minimum height of 79mm and a width of 50mm for the characters (except the number 1 or letter I).
    4. The spacing between the characters and lines on the plate must be within specific tolerances.
    5. The plate must display the name of the registration plate supplier and their British Standard Mark (BS AU 145d).
    6. The plate must not have any additional marks or graphics that could obstruct the registration number.
    7. The plate must be clearly visible and securely attached to the vehicle, with no obstructions.

Any number plate that does not meet these requirements or has been altered in any way may be considered illegal and can result in fines, penalty points, and even prosecution. It's important to ensure that your car's number plate is legal and compliant with the regulations before driving on public roads.
