Are 4D Number Plates Legal?

So one of the most asked questions we are get are things like 'Are 4D reg plates legal' or 'can you have 4D number plates UK?' and the simple answer is YES absolutely - 4D number plates are 100% legal in the UK as long as they comply with the current UK legislation. The DVLA have some pretty simple rules and as long as 'we' stay with them we're A-okay.

The DVLA say - Your number plates can also: have 3D (raised) characters, display certain flags, symbols and identifiers display a green flash, if you have a zero-emission vehicle.

However, it is illegal to have a number plate which isn’t readable. If the letters are too 3D it could make them hard or impossible to read from certain angles or from a camera. It is also illegal to have 4D Neon Plates on UK roads. We recommend either 3mm or 5mm 4D Number Plates.

Can Cameras Read 4D Plates?

Absolutely - Just like any other road legal number plate, 4D number plates can be read by ANPR cameras.

However, we need to to fall in line with the induindustry and to be honest what people are seraching for. So - yeah 4D plates are not 4D they are just a differnt style to other 3D number plates and 3D Gel Plates.

How are 4D Number Plates Made?

Quite simply - we make 4D Number Plates by sticking black acrylic letters or numbers directly to either a white reflective number plate (font) or to the yellow reflective number Plate (back) we use high grade 3M adestive tape and a mm precise gig to make sure they are strait and thge spacing is correct.

Do you have to tell insurance about 4D plates?

There are lots of conflconflicting information from other companies over this topic. However if you are simply replacing a standard 2D printed road legal number plate, with a 4D road legal number plate you do not have to inform your ininsurance company.

If you are adding a new privated registration to your vehicle, then you must inform your insurance company of the change. Most of these can been done online and for free.

Which documents do you need to buy a 4D Number Plate Online?

Buyers of online number plates will need to provide 2 forms of documentation. Proof of identity - name and address and proof of entitlement.

Proof identity include:

A driving licence, with or without a photo (Does not have to be issued in the UK.
An electricity, gas, water or landline phone bill, council tax bill or Northern Ireland rates bill issued within the last six months.
A bank or building society statement issued within the last six months.
A national identity card issued by the government of a state or territory other than the United Kingdom.
